So What Is Style?

November 17, 2011

It is first of all coherence, sometimes artificial, at times natural.

Something is  done a certain way  which then becomes identifiable or typical. It could be just in a colour combination or a perfume or a way of writing or drawing or dressing.

However, it cannot be visible to everybody, and yet, strangely enough, most people have it in their language.  Do the experiment:

→ → Take a word like “tenacious” or “quixotic” or “abrasive”.

→ → Include it casually in your conversation next time you talk to friends or family members.

→ → Watch them react.

A single word made them perk up!  That word was not part of what they know as your style.

X has a lot of style

This could mean that her preferences or choices are predictable. Or it could mean that she consciously accentuates something about her.

Consider as extreme examples Lady Gaga, who is all artifice, or Bob Dylan, who is mostly himself.

As to Dylan, that must have been very hard for him to do when he started out and went onstage entirely defenseless. It took a lot of guts.

The “Man of Constant Sorrow”

And  Lady Gaga? She is all manufactured, and there is a great team working with her, calculating, designing, rehearsing, defining. There has to be some mind behind it all.  Is it her own?

It doesn’t really matter. She is simply merchandise continually getting updated by market research. On her part, it takes a lot of discipline, and so she may in fact be caught on that dangerous path she is seems to be only acting out.
